Tread Lightly! Celebrates 20 Years

In 1985, a small group of Forest Service employees created a short phrase to help remind recreationists to minimize their impact on the environment.  That little phrase has since changed the nation.  Twenty years later,"Tread Lightly!" has grown from a simple message into an influential, multi-faceted organization with a remarkable following of supporters, partners, and volunteers.

Tread Lightly! 20 Year Timeline

Why I strongly believe in Tread Lightly!

Submitted by Tread Lightly! member Dale Nichols for our 20th Anniversary

I have been off roading either on motorcycles or Jeeps for over 35 years. I have seen numerous OHV areas closed due to people not maintaining the trails or destroying areas off the trails. I love being able to take the trails into the mountains or forests and enjoy what great scenery nature has to offer. To me, going 10 mph on a good trail is much better than 70 mph down the interstate. I am always encouraging fellow Jeep Club members to honor the Tread Lightly! rules, and they do. I want to see that trails and parks remain open for future generations to enjoy. We need to have a loud voice to our local and state politicians to keep these open. I cannot think of anything that is shared with your family and friends that is more fun and educational than going off road and seeing sites you may never have the opportunity to see otherwise.
